October Celebrations

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This month is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! Check out Making Strides of Denver, a local breast cancer awareness run.Three participants in a breast cancer awareness month run

"The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks raise awareness and funds to save lives from breast cancer. Each event is a noncompetitive 3 to 5 mile walk that brings people together to make a difference for everyone who has been touched by breast cancer. The events raise money to fund innovative research, provide free information and support, and to help people reduce their breast cancer risk or find it early when it's most treatable.

“From the opening ceremony to the post-walk entertainment, a Making Strides event is a celebration of survivors and opportunity to remember loved-ones lost. It's a day that shouldn't be missed and won't be forgotten."

Making Strides of Denver is about a 23 minute drive from Arrive 800 Penn. Happy Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Upcoming Holidays

National Chocolate Day

Will you be shopping at Hammond's Candies to celebrate National Chocolate Day this year?

Chocolate on a table

"Over the past 90 years, the "Mile High" city of Denver, Colorado, has seen a number of fine chocolate and candy manufacturers come and go, but one special company is still very much in business.

“On his first day of high school, a young man named Carl Hammond returned home and announced that he didn’t need any more education. “Fine,” his mother replied, “but you’re not going to lie around the house. Go get a job.” And that’s just what Carl Hammond did; he got a job…as an apprentice in a candy factory."

Hammond's Candies is about a 15 minute drive away from Arrive 800 Penn. Happy National Chocolate Day!

National Cat Day

Will you be visiting a local animal shelter or humane society to celebrate National Cat Day this year? Visit Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue!

"Rocky Mountain Feline Rescue (RMFR) was founded in 1982 with the mission to care for homeless, abandoned, abused, and neglected cat populations. Over the past twenty-five years the organization has grown into a limited-intake, free-roaming shelter with space for 125 cats. In 2016, RMFR provided medical expenses, housing, food, exams, in-house surgeries, and medical treatment for over 1448 animals.

The rescue prioritizes being a safe-space for FIV+, FeLV+, and senior cat populations often underserved by municipal shelter programs. In 2016, RMFR had a euthanasia rate of .5% where 8 of the 1448 animals who came through the shelter were euthanized humanely and only out of medical necessity."

Jack's only hope of survival lies in the legendary Trident of Poseidon, but to find it he must forge an uneasy alliance with Carina Smyth (Kaya Scodelario), a brilliant and beautiful astronomer, and Henry (Brenton Thwaites), a headstrong young sailor in the Royal Navy. At the helm of the Dying Gull, his pitifully small and shabby ship, Captain Jack seeks not only to reverse his recent spate of ill fortune, but to save his very life from the most formidable and malicious foe he has ever faced. Book Suggestions

We Were Eight Years in Power: An American Tragedy by Ta-Nehisi Coates

“We were eight years in power” was the lament of Reconstruction-era black politicians as the American experiment in multiracial democracy ended with the return of white supremacist rule in the South. In this sweeping collection of new and selected essays, Ta-Nehisi Coates explores the tragic echoes of that history in our own time: the unprecedented election of a black president followed by a vicious backlash that fueled the election of the man Coates argues is America’s “first white president.”

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban: The Illustrated Edition by J.K. Rowling and Jim Kay

"For twelve long years, the dread fortress of Azkaban held an infamous prisoner named Sirius Black. Convicted of killing thirteen people with a single curse, he was said to be the heir apparent to the Dark Lord, Voldemort. Now he has escaped, leaving only two clues as to where he might be headed: Harry Potter's defeat of You-Know-Who was Black's downfall as well. And the Azkaban guards heard Black muttering in his sleep, "He's at Hogwarts . . . he's at Hogwarts." Harry Potter isn't safe, not even within the walls of his magical school, surrounded by his friends. Because on top of it all, there may well be a traitor in their midst."
